Bomb scare in Howrah after suspicious bag found on GT Road, turns out to be mangoes
Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee has demanded action against those involved in the protest and unrest outside the residence of Assembly Deputy Leader Sandipan Saha. Addressing the issue on Friday, Banerjee questioned the role of BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal, who had led a demonstration outside the residence a day earlier.
Speaking in the Assembly, Banerjee asked whether Priyanka Tibrewal had been acting in a political capacity or in a personal capacity while organising the protest. He also referred to statements made by BJP leaders urging party workers and supporters to maintain peace and avoid violence, while questioning how such incidents could occur despite those appeals.
On Thursday, Priyanka Tibrewal led BJP workers and supporters in a protest against Sandipan Saha and his father, Swarnakamal Saha. Demonstrators marched to the residence and accused the two of corruption, illegal construction, taking commissions and extortion. Protesters carried posters and banners highlighting the allegations and staged a demonstration outside the premises.
During the protest, one BJP worker was seen striking a photograph of Sandipan Saha with a shoe while slogans were raised outside the residence. The incident drew political attention as tensions escalated between the BJP and leaders of the newly recognised opposition bloc in the Assembly.
The controversy comes shortly after the rebel Trinamool faction was officially recognised as the Opposition in the Assembly. Ritabrata Banerjee was named Leader of the Opposition, while Sandipan Saha became one of four deputy leaders. On Friday, Banerjee, Saha and other leaders addressed the media, condemned the protest outside the residence, demanded an investigation into the incident and sought action against those responsible.
